After yesterday’s meltdown over Instagram’s algorithm change, Instagram has announced another update to the platform. Videos on the photo-sharing platform have been extended to 60 seconds, previously the maximum duration of a video on the platform was 15 seconds.
“We want to bring you fun, flexible and creative ways to create and watch video on Instagram. As part of our continued commitment, you’ll soon have the flexibility to tell your story in up to 60 seconds of video. This is one step of many you’ll see this year,” according to the company’s blog post.

Instagram is owned by Facebook and loved by over 400 million users, but that was before Instagram added an algorithm to their photo feed upsetting millions of people overnight. Previously images were shown in reverse chronological order, but now they will be selected based on several secret criteria and then shown out of order to the user. As Instagram put it, users will now see images “based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting, and the timeliness of the post.” In other words, what Instagram thinks you will like based on length of time you’ve followed that person, comments, likes, frequency, recency, and other indicators Facebook uses.
Naturally this move won’t affect everyone equally. ”Sexy” brands (fashion, music, entertainment) will likely be fine, perhaps even better off due to the engagement they already see. This move leaves “unsexy” brands out in the wind with little in the way of support except for the signs that point to the advertising department. The logic is that people will be able to follow more accounts without worrying about them drowning out your favourites. Those with people in international time zones will also now find it easier to see their content. The move is also a fairly nice way—if history is anything to go by—to get brands to pay to be seen.
